The Benefits of Affliction – John Newton

Methinks, if we might go to heaven without suffering, we would be unwilling to desire it. Why should we ever wish to go by any other path to heaven – than that which Jesus has consecrated and endeared, by his own example? Especially as his people’s sufferings are not penal – there is no wrath in them. The cup he puts in their hands is very different from that which he drank for their sakes, and is only medicinal to promote their chief good. Thus the Lord, by pain, sickness, and disappointments, by breaking our cisterns and withering our gourds – weakens our attachment to this world, and makes the thought of leaving it, more easy and more desirable.

The Ultimate Guide to Posture

Take a peek into most every office in America. What do you see? Workers hunched over their computers. Look at your fellow commuters on the subway. How do they sit? Slumped over their smartphones. Survey the friends and loved ones around you. How do they stand and walk? Likely a little stooped over. Industrialization brought an increase in sitting to the modern world. And modern technology has given us devices that we hold and view while hunched over.

To get us humans moving forward again into what Winston Churchill called “the broad sunlit uplands” of a bright and upright future, I’ve spent the last few months researching the benefits and mechanics of good posture, and how to achieve it in an age of schlumpliness. Today I’m going to share everything I learned. I don’t think you’ll find a more thorough or clear guide to posture on the web, so sit up straight, friends, and read on.

The world’s bright tomorrows

Although we have a long, long way to go in solving the internal problem of race facing our nation, I still have faith in the future. We are gradually emerging from the bleak and desolate midnight of injustice into the bright and glittering daybreak of freedom and justice. This remains true because God is forever at work in his universe. I am convinced now more than ever before that God lives. They that stand against Him stand in a tragic and an already declared minority; they that stand with Him stand in the glow of the world’s bright tomorrows.

Martin Luther King, Jr., August 31, 1957
